I think it’s perfectly possible, although it does take considerable effort. ⠀ One caveat! If you have an exam coming up, it’s better to focus on the language you’ll be tested in and take a break from the other one.
Especially if you learn a second language from scratch.
This always requires a lot of effort, and in this situation it is better to direct it to preparation. ⠀
But what to do if you are a supporter of a tough approach and want to learn languages simultaneously and intensively?
- Focus on similarities and differences. Usually they are immediately noticeable in vocabulary and grammatical structures. This will allow you to quickly absorb the material simultaneously in two systems and at the same time prevent confusion in your head. ⠀
- Try using textbooks written in the language you know best. Precisely for learning a second, weaker language. For example, a French textbook written for English speakers. You will learn a second language and not forget the first. ⠀
- Alternate languages throughout the day. I personally don’t like the idea of dedicating one half of the week to one language and the other half to another. It's like going to class once a week and the rest of the time just doing nothing. It’s as if you fall out of the process and then spend a lot of energy trying to get involved in it again. The brain is able to restructure itself easily when there is a habit and motivation.
The main thing is to organize your studies correctly. ⠀
✔️It's good to take breaks between classes. For example, in the morning you studied English, and in the evening - French. During the day, your brain switched to something else, “ventilated.” ⠀
✔️Or train one skill in two languages on the same day. Today - speaking, tomorrow - listening, the day after tomorrow - reading. ⠀
Yes, learning two languages at the same time is not easy. Therefore, it is important that you have a clear understanding of why you need it. You can move on with this enthusiasm. ⠀
But I repeat, try to build these energy-consuming processes competently, and be gentle with yourself, so as not to burn out. ⠀
