How TEF/TCF preparation books can mislead you
Preparing for TEF/TCF Canada usually starts with the search for a good textbook. There are only a handful of books for these exams, so people often forget to question their quality. Students open the ‘Description’ chapter to learn about the exam content, the scoring and the time allowed to prepare their answers. And that’s where the confusion begins. ⠀
1. Because there is no textbook for either TCF or TEF that would prepare you exclusively for the exam for immigration to Canada. As a rule, tests for different purposes are collected in one manual: for studying, obtaining citizenship, immigration to Quebec and more. Each of these tests has a different number of required parts. ⠀
- In TEF and TCF there are four of them - reading, writing, listening and speaking. Part Structure de langue does not need to be returned. ⠀
2. Anyone preparing for TEF has most likely already noticed that both textbooks promise us a full 20 minutes to prepare the oral part, and then another 15 minutes to answer. In total, it takes more than half an hour for one person to “speak.” ⠀
3.And in some manuals it is written that you will be deducted one point for each incorrect answer. That is, not only will they not give it, but they will also take it away from the points already accumulated from the correct answers. ⠀
- As you understand, the second and third points are absolutely untrue.
- Apart from Tâche 2 in TCF, no additional time is given for preparation for the oral part in any task. Prepare to react on the fly.
- Points will not be deducted for missing a question, answering incorrectly, or checking two boxes instead of one. You just don’t type anything and that’s it. ⠀
