EXPRESS ENTRY PROFILE TO ITA

What to check before submitting your Express Entry profile and while you wait for an invitation

An Express Entry profile looks simpler than a full-fledged permanent residence application. But it is from your profile data that IRCC decides whether you can enter the applicant pool, calculates your CRS rating score, and determines which invitation rounds your profile can participate in.

Therefore, it is better to fill out the profile not “roughly, and then I’ll correct it later,” but immediately according to exact data. If you later receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA), important information from your profile will have to be supported by documents.

THE MOST IMPORTANT

A profile is not yet an application for permanent residence, but its data is already important

Creating an Express Entry profile does not in itself mean that you have applied for permanent residence and does not guarantee an invitation.

But the profile cannot be considered a harmless preliminary questionnaire. According to the information you provide, the system:

  • checks whether you can enter the Express Entry pool;
  • calculates your CRS score;
  • determines which rounds of invitations a profile can apply to;
  • later matches important information with a complete application and documents if you receive an ITA.

Rule of Thumb: If you don't know the exact date, exam result, work period, or other important fact, it's best to check it first rather than enter a convenient estimate.

BEFORE THE PROFILE

First collect data that cannot be safely guessed

It is not necessary to collect the entire future package of documents in advance. But it is better to have basic information before your eyes. This way, there is less risk of building a profile on an incorrect date, an outdated result, or misunderstood work experience.

01

Identity card and family situation

Please have up-to-date passport or travel document details and accurate marital status information ready.

If you have a spouse, partner or children, check in advance what family information is needed at the profile stage.

02

Language exam

Express Entry requires results from a language test accepted by IRCC.

The real data of the current result is entered into the profile. The language test must be less than two years old both when filling out the profile and later when applying for permanent residence.

03

Education

If you are using foreign education for program requirements or want to receive credit for it, a foreign degree assessment for immigration purposes (ECA) may be necessary.

The ECA must be under five years of age when completing the profile and when subsequently submitting the application.

04

Work experience

Before the profile, it is useful to break down the work into periods and check:

  • start and end dates;
  • actual responsibilities;
  • number of hours and nature of employment, if relevant to the program;
  • the Canadian occupation code (NOC) you are going to enter;
  • Will it be possible to confirm this experience with documents later?
05

Funds for moving

For some Express Entry programs, you must show sufficient funds to cover your move and your first time in Canada.

Do not use the old amount from a saved article or someone else's example. IRCC periodically updates the requirements, so you should check the official website for the current size.

06

Provincial nomination and job offer

If you have a provincial nomination or job offer, please only submit it based on actual documents and current guidelines.

A job offer no longer earns additional CRS points, but may still be relevant to program requirements in some cases.

HOW THE SYSTEM READS THE PROFILE

One fact can simultaneously influence entry into the pool, CRS and participation in a particular round

This is one of the reasons why the profile should not be filled out mechanically.

Can you enter the pool

The system first checks to see if you qualify for at least one of the three federal programs that Express Entry administers.

If not, the profile will not be included in the candidate pool.

What is your CRS score?

If a profile is accepted into the pool, the system calculates a CRS rating score. It is influenced by age, education, language, work experience, family situation and other factors provided by the system.

In what rounds can you be considered?

Express Entry has general, programmatic and category invitation rounds.

In the category round, a high CRS alone is not enough: the profile must also meet the criteria of a specific category. IRCC may change these criteria, so they should be checked against the current official page, and not against the old list of professions or categories.

Key Point: The question “what is my CRS?” is important, but it does not replace the question “what program am I even in the pool for and what rounds can I apply to?”

WORK IN PROFILE

Job title alone does not determine your NOC

What is important in your profile is not the beautiful translation of the job title, but what kind of work you actually did.

For example, two people with the same job title may have different responsibilities and different NOC codes. Conversely, similar duties may appear under different job titles.

Before submitting your profile, it's helpful to check three things together:

01

What did you really do

Make a short list of your main responsibilities without trying to fit them into the right code in advance.

02

What period of work are you using?

Not every period of employment automatically qualifies for program eligibility or points. Dates, duration, nature of employment, and specific program requirements are important.

03

How will you confirm this experience later?

At the profile stage, the full package of documents is usually not uploaded, but after the ITA, the claimed experience may need to be verified.

If it is already clear that the employer’s letter, contract or other documents do not reflect the actual responsibilities and period of work, it is better to sort this out before the invitation.

THE PROFILE DOES NOT FREEZE YOUR SITUATION

If important circumstances have changed, the profile must be brought into line with reality

IRCC explicitly states that your pool profile needs to be updated if your situation changes.

01

Received a new language result

Update your profile if a new test in progress changes what you claim.

02

A new job has appeared or an old one has ended

Check to see if the change affects experience, program, or other profile information and update it with the latest information.

03

Got married or divorced

Marital status may influence profile and CRS. Don't leave the old state just because it gives a more convenient result.

04

A child was born or adopted

Family composition must remain current.

05

Received or lost a provincial nomination

This change can have a big impact on your profile and invitation and should be reflected without delay.

06

Other information that the profile asks for has changed

If a fact in a profile no longer matches reality, find out exactly how it needs to be updated first, rather than waiting for the ITA to fix it all at once.

Important: After changing the section, the updated profile must be submitted again through your IRCC account. Simply saving the change within the form is not enough.

WHILE YOU'RE IN THE POOL

Some data may become outdated even without your action.

A profile can become problematic not only because you changed your job or marital status. Individual documents and conditions have a validity period.

01

Validity period of the language test

The result should remain valid. If the test expires, it may affect your ability to remain in Express Entry and subsequent applications.

02

ECA validity period

If you use a foreign education assessment, ensure that it remains valid both at the profile stage and at the time of future submission.

03

Work experience that must fall within the required period

Some requirements count experience in a specific time period. While you are waiting for an invitation, the old period of work may eventually no longer meet this condition.

04

Required amount of funds

If your program requires relocation funds, check IRCC for the current amount. Amounts may be subject to revision.

05

Term of the profile itself

The profile does not remain in the pool indefinitely. If the deadline is coming to an end and you want to continue participating, please save the necessary data for a new profile in advance.

IRCC warns that after the expiration date, the system does not retain old profile information for automatic transfer.

06

Messages in IRCC account

Check your account and contact information. Important status changes and invitations appear there.

IF YOUR PROFILE IS NOT IN THE POOL

Such a profile cannot simply be opened and corrected.

If, after submitting, IRCC determines that your profile data does not meet the Express Entry requirements, it can no longer be edited. For a new attempt, a new profile is created.

But creating a new profile right away with the same data is usually pointless.

First, it’s worth understanding why the previous result was negative:

  • whether there was an error in the answers;
  • whether your circumstances have changed;
  • whether a new language result has appeared;
  • whether you have accumulated additional work experience;
  • whether you received a document that was not there before;
  • whether you qualify for at least one Express Entry program.

An online pre-screening tool and a full profile may produce different results. IRCC specifically explains that it is the full profile that contains enough detailed data for the final check of the ability to enter the pool.

TYPICAL ERRORS

A mistake in a profile often begins with a desire to fill it out quickly

01

Provide approximate dates

Later dates have to be linked with documents and more detailed history. “Plus or minus a month” easily turns into a contradiction.

02

Select NOC by job title

NOC is determined primarily by the actual work performed, and not by what the employer's position was called.

03

Use a language or ECA result without checking the term

A document may be valid today but expire before a future filing.

04

Keep old information after the situation changes

The profile in the pool must remain current. A new marriage, job, language achievement or other important change does not have to wait for an ITA.

05

Consider CRS as the only condition

A high score does not replace the requirements of the program and the rules of a particular round.

06

Trying to make your profile “more profitable” than the facts allow

IRCC warns of serious consequences for false information or withholding important information. You need to indicate what actually happened and what, if necessary, can be explained and confirmed.

CONSULTATION OR INDEPENDENT UPDATE

Not every change requires consultation

Many simple changes can be made yourself using IRCC guidelines.

For example, if you understand exactly what fact has changed, how it is reflected in the profile and does not raise questions about the program or CRS.

A separate analysis is more useful when the change is related to what your profile is based on:

  • it is unclear which NOC to use;
  • it is debatable what experience can be taken into account;
  • your marital status has changed and you do not understand the impact on CRS;
  • received a new language result and want to understand the consequences;
  • found an error in an already submitted profile;
  • there is a discrepancy with information from previous applications to Canada;
  • received an ITA, but after recalculation the data is already different from those for which the invitation was received.
QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

Frequently asked questions

Typically, at the profile stage, you enter information from documents, rather than uploading a complete set of the future application. But the data must be accurate, because after the ITA, important information will have to be confirmed.
