Express Entry is not a stand-alone immigration program or a ready-made application for permanent residence. This is IRCC's online system through which applicants to the three federal programs create a profile, receive a CRS score, and may be invited to submit a full application.
If you are just starting to figure it out, it is important not to start with the question “how many points do I have.” First, you need to understand whether you qualify for at least one Express Entry program, and only then evaluate the CRS and past rounds of invitations.
These are often confused. You can calculate your CRS score correctly and still misjudge your eligibility.
In order for a profile to be included in Express Entry, you must meet the requirements of at least one of three federal programs:
Each program has its own requirements for work experience, language and other circumstances.
If program requirements are met, the profile receives Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) points.
CRS determines the profile's placement among other candidates. During a round, IRCC invites the highest ranked candidates who qualify for that round.
Important: A high estimated CRS does not replace program requirements. Conversely, meeting the program requirements does not mean that an invitation will come in the next round.
Changes checked: October 19, 2026. Until November 3, 2026, job offers do not earn separate CRS points. From November 3, IRCC introduces Labour Market Integration (LMI): the higher score is used — qualifying Canadian work experience with any high-wage bonus, or a qualifying job offer in a high-wage NOC. These two branches are not added together. An occupation’s level comes from the IRCC list, rather than the candidate’s individual salary. The former 50/200 points are not reinstated. From November 3, 2026, the LMIA requirement changes apply to qualifying job offers under Express Entry. For FSW/FST, the temporary public policy applies to candidates invited on or after November 3, 2026, subject to its conditions. An offer outside the high-wage list may meet program requirements without earning job offer CRS points. Other work permit and PNP requirements are assessed separately; IRCC continues to assess whether the offer is genuine.
There is no need to pre-select a program just by name. First compare your facts with the requirements of each.

In addition to suitable experience and language, there are separate requirements related to the profession and, depending on the situation, to the job offer or Canadian certificate of qualifications.
Therefore, it cannot be assessed only by the overall CRS.
Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs) are separate from the three federal Express Entry programs, but some provincial streams are linked to Express Entry.
If a person receives a suitable provincial nomination, this can significantly change their position in the system. The conditions of the nomination itself must be checked separately for a specific province and stream.
Before creating a profile, you need to understand whether the minimum conditions of at least one of the three federal programs are met.
At this stage, work experience, language, education and the correct definition of profession according to NOC are especially important.
The profile will require accurate information, not rough estimates.

In your profile you provide information about yourself. IRCC uses this data to determine whether you qualify for one or more programs.
A profile is not yet an application for permanent residence.
The system then assigns CRS scores to the profile.
CRS shows your profile's ranking among other candidates and may change if your data or calculation rules change.

Therefore, you cannot look only at one past passing score and consider it a constant bar.
If a profile is selected in the round, IRCC issues an Invitation to Apply (ITA).
The invitation will indicate which program you can apply for.
Once invited, you have 60 calendar days to submit your online application for permanent residence.
At this stage, supporting documents are uploaded, fees are paid, and it is verified that the information in the application matches what was specified in the profile.
IRCC separately verifies program requirements, accuracy of information, and admissibility into Canada.

The conditions of a specific program are checked. For example:
If you do not meet the requirements of any of the three programs, your profile cannot enter the pool, regardless of your calculated CRS score.
CRS answers another question:
How high does your profile rank among other candidates?
Points are used after a person has already met the requirements of at least one program.
CRS is important for invitation, but it does not replace program review.
Two people can have the same CRS but have different reasons for qualifying for Express Entry.
Conversely, two individuals may qualify for the same program but have very different CRSs due to age, language, education, Canadian experience, and other factors.
CRS is a scoring system that evaluates a profile based on several groups of factors.
Age affects your points. Use the age that applies at the time of the calculation or invitation.
Canadian education or foreign education supported by a qualifying ECA assessment will count if you wish to receive credit for it.
Language test scores influence CRS directly and may be further amplified by other factors.
Only IRCC approved tests are accepted for Express Entry.
The system takes into account Canadian experience, and the combination of foreign experience with language, education or Canadian experience can also affect the final score.
If your spouse or partner is traveling with you, some of their information may also affect the calculation: for example, education, language and Canadian work experience.
Additional points may arise, for example, in the event of a qualifying provincial nomination or in other cases provided for in the current CRS rules.
Under the rules in effect from March 25, 2025 until November 3, 2026, job offers do not earn separate CRS points. From November 3, a qualifying offer in a high-wage NOC may earn 50, 70 or 100 points in the LMI job offer branch; the higher of that score and the Canadian work experience score is used. The former 50/200 points are not reinstated. An offer’s relevance to FSW/FST eligibility and other programs is assessed separately.
A job offer may still matter for FSW, FST and some provincial stream requirements, so do not overlook it.
IRCC conducts different types of rounds. Therefore, when comparing your CRS, it is important to look not only at the number, but also at who was invited in a particular round.
IRCC selects profiles that qualify for one of the three Express Entry programs and invites applicants with the highest CRS within the round criteria.
Only candidates who meet the specified program participate in them.
For example, IRCC may hold separate rounds for candidates with a provincial nomination.
IRCC may designate specific categories of candidates to address specific economic challenges.

You can complete your Express Entry profile yourself, but there is no point in rushing if the initial data has not yet been verified.
All Express Entry programs require the score of an approved language test, even if English or French is your first language.
Results must be valid: for Express Entry, they are accepted as long as they are less than two years old.
For English, IRCC accepts CELPIP-General, IELTS General Training and PTE Core. For French - TEF Canada and TCF Canada.
An Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) shows what a foreign credential is equivalent to in Canada.
If education was completed outside of Canada, the ECA is required, in particular, to enable the main applicant to meet the FSW requirements or obtain CRS points for foreign education.
The ECA must be under five years of age at the time of profile creation and application submission.
NOC — National Occupational Classification.
NOC is chosen not by a beautiful job title and not only by the entry in the work book. It is necessary to compare the actual work with the job description and main responsibilities.

Important: When creating a profile, you do not need to upload the entire set of documents at once. But the profile data will later have to be confirmed after receiving the ITA.
An ITA is an invitation to submit a full application for permanent residence under a specified program.
After the invitation, it is important to double-check:

If the situation has changed during this time, you cannot automatically assume that the invitation remains safe for use. Sometimes a change just needs to be reflected correctly, and sometimes it can impact CRS or program compliance.
Express Entry is an application management system. Within it there are three federal programs with different requirements.

Even a document that was valid when the profile was created may no longer be valid by the time the application is submitted.
