Expired WES ECA for Express Entry: when do you need a new report?

The validity of an ECA is not determined by the activity of the WES account or the presence of an old PDF. IRCC requires an ECA for immigration purposes from a designated organization/professional body; the report must be less than 5 years old both when filling out the Express Entry profile and when submitting the PR application. If the ECA expires before the e-APR, the candidate must obtain a valid re-issued/new report and update the relevant data. WES provider workflow helps to get a report, but does not decide IRCC acceptance, equivalency or points in advance.

Two required dates and one current report

IRCC current ECA page says report must be less than 5 years old when you complete Express Entry profile and when you submit application. If invited, make sure ECA remains valid for planned application date; if not invited, it should remain valid for rest of pool time. Applying with expired ECA leads to refusal. Contact issuing organization if expiry approaches; re-issue depends on provider/type. WES currently instructs eligible clients to log into My Account and order “Duplicate IRCC” to extend an IRCC ECA another five years, but this provider action must be verified live and completed before relying on report. Use new issue/reference/result exactly, update profile/e-APR via current channel and recalculate education factors. Standard WES evaluation for employment/education is not automatically immigration ECA.

What to do with an ECA that is expiring or has already expired

Proceed in order and check the governing instruction at each stage.

1. Identify actual report
Open report and record issuing organization, purpose, issue date, reference number, credential and equivalency in protected ledger. Check current IRCC designated list and occupation-specific professional body rules. Do not infer report type from WES account product name alone.

2. Calculate event validity
Apply strict less-than-five-year test to profile completion and planned e-APR submission, not only today. Add pool/profile expiry and application deadline to calendar. If report is near boundary, renewal early is safer than planning last-minute submission; do not predict ITA timing.

For WES, sign into My Account and review Duplicate IRCC/current renewal option for exact report. For another organization contact issuer. Save current instruction/order but treat it as process evidence, not valid ECA. Provider may require new documents, verification or updated fee.

When new/re-issued report exists, compare issue date, reference and Canadian equivalency with old report. Do not assume result unchanged. Confirm electronic delivery/recipient handling where applicable. Recalculate FSW eligibility/education and CRS using actual new result.

What if the ECA expired after submission?

The published IRCC rule specifically requires report to be less than 5 years old when profile is completed and when PR application is submitted. Preserve proof of the issue date and actual submission confirmation. Do not replace a valid-at-submission report merely because calendar later passed unless IRCC asks or another material change requires action.
