Expired WES ECA for Express Entry: when do you need a new report?

Express Entry requires an educational credential assessment (ECA) for immigration purposes from an organization or professional body designated by IRCC. The report must be less than 5 years old both when you complete your profile and when you submit your permanent residence application. Access to your WES account or an old PDF does not establish validity. If the report will expire before you apply, obtain a valid report and update your details in advance. A WES report does not guarantee a particular equivalency, points or acceptance by IRCC.

Check your report at both required dates

IRCC requires an ECA issued less than 5 years ago both when you complete your Express Entry profile and when you submit your permanent residence application. While you remain in the pool without an invitation, keep the report valid. An application with an expired ECA will be refused. Contact the issuer before expiry. WES’s published instructions describe using the Order Duplicate IRCC option in My Account to extend an ECA for another five years; check whether it is available for your report. After receiving the new report, verify its date, reference number and result, update your profile or application and recalculate your points. A standard WES evaluation for employment or education is not automatically an immigration ECA.

1. Check the report itself
Open the report and verify its issuer, purpose, date, reference number, credential and Canadian equivalency. Check IRCC’s designated list and any professional-body requirement for your occupation. The product name in your WES account alone does not establish the report type.

Apply the strict less-than-five-year rule at profile completion and planned application submission, not just today. Add report, profile and application deadlines to your calendar. Start renewal early if expiry is near; you cannot predict an invitation date.

In WES My Account, check whether Order Duplicate IRCC is available for your report. Contact the issuer if another organization prepared it. Save the instructions and order confirmation, but wait for the completed report. The issuer may require new documents, verification or payment at the current rate.

Compare the issue date, reference number and Canadian equivalency. The result may change. Where applicable, confirm electronic delivery to the correct recipient. Use the actual new result to recalculate education points, CRS and FSW eligibility.

Before an invitation, update the profile fields following the current instructions. When preparing the electronic application, enter and upload the valid report. After submission, report material changes through the requested channel or the IRCC web form as instructed. Keep the old and new details and dates; an explanation does not replace the update.

Can the equivalency change when I renew?

Who needs a professional body instead of WES?

Check your NOC code and current IRCC instructions before ordering or renewing; a routine WES renewal may not be the right route.

What if my ECA expires while my profile is in the pool?

Start obtaining a new report before the old one expires. Then update your profile according to the account instructions and recheck federal eligibility and CRS. Do not rely on a predicted draw or retain expired details. If the profile becomes ineligible, check the system’s rules and consequences; any new profile must use truthful details and completed evidence.

What if my ECA expires after I submit the application?
